Let The Sun Shine, and Bozo?

Sunday, May 16, 2010

My friend over at Walking Butterfly just gave me this cool award! Being the doof that I am I can't quite figure out yet how to link the picture back to her. But run over and check her out!

As for the Bozo part. I'm having a difficult time waiting until tomorrow morning to call the charge nurse, the head of the nursing department and the head of patient relations at the hospital that my son was released from today.

We're all sitting in the room waiting for him to be released and the nurse walks in and says "Be sure to bring those crutches back for the next Bozo that comes in."

I looked at her and said "Bozo? You're callling my son Bozo?"

"Yes he's a Bozo. He's been in here three times in three years. Once to have a nail removed from his hand. He was here last fall to have his leg re-built after the car accident, and now he's broken it again and had more surgery. He's a Bozo."

I'm looking at the bed now knowing that if I look at her my death ray vision will activate. I take a deep breath and ask again "Bozo?"

She must have seen the the holes being seared into the bed and the red glow emanating from my eyes and she changed her tone a smidge.

"I apologize, I mean high risk patient."

Ok, number one accident: bumped while working, nail gun slipped, shot him in the thumb.

Number two accident: Walking home after drinking too much at a tavern, is on the shoulder of the road and is hit by a high school coach that had just left a bar and was driving and then left my son on the side of the road and fled the scene.

Number three accident: fell while hiking due to weakened leg because of accident number two.

Should he have been hiking? The surgeon released him for normal activity. The mom in me wants let him have it for that, but hey, the surgeon did release him.

The anger in me began to rise. My husband and son must have seen it coming. Jeff puts his hand on my shoulder holding me in the chair. Cole firmly said "Mom!" The nurse left the room. I took a deep breath knowing that tomorrow, Monday, will come. Phone calls will be made and hopefully she'll realize that "Bozo" is a comment best left for a parent to make.

BTW, my daughter has had 16 surgeries in five years. I wonder what that makes her?

OMG! "BOZO"? that is horrible beyond horrible! It is one thing for a parent to jokingly call their kid names, but the nurse?? wow, I bet she is lucky your family was there to restrain you!! that is amazing!

Oh, and the name you called yourself (Doof?) in this post was also totally uncalled for. You aren't supposed to link the picture back to me, just linking my blog name is perfect! Thanks!

The Bipolar Diva May 16, 2010 at 6:40 PM

I could have killed her right there!

I was able to get the award linked back to you in my sidebar :)

Gucci Mama May 16, 2010 at 7:32 PM

She was BEGGING you for a throat punch. She's obviously a democrat. Only democrats stay stupid ass things. ;)

Unknown Mami May 16, 2010 at 7:38 PM

I commend you for your restraint. I would have wanted to bitch slap that BITCH! Honestly, since when is that an appropriate way to refer to a patient.

Unknown Mami May 16, 2010 at 7:38 PM

Oops. last one was supposed to be a question mark, not a period.

The Bipolar Diva May 16, 2010 at 7:54 PM

I had to take an Ativan just typing that Bozo part! I'm counting down to 8am! I can just envision that stethoscope wrapped tightly around her neck!

Nolie May 16, 2010 at 8:05 PM

You have GOT to be kidding me. That nurse would have had to call security and had me removed from the hospital if that was me. You let out a blast of just exactly what kind of bozo SHE is tomorrow when you call every single department you can think of.

The Bipolar Diva May 16, 2010 at 9:16 PM

Oh, and there's another interesting tid-bit that I almost forgot about in my motherly madness. There was another patient in the room behind the curtain while she was LOUDLY calling my son a Bozo and rattling off his MEDICAL HISTORY for the entire room to hear. Hmmmmmm......What happened to HIPAA?
Oh, I think I just may enjoy tomorrow!

Living in Taradise May 16, 2010 at 10:13 PM

BOZO! That is awful. Totally unprofessional!

The Bipolar Diva May 16, 2010 at 10:20 PM

Man I wish you were all in Portland. We would march into that hospital and light them up! Well, at least for the one "nurse" the others were fab.

MommyLovesStilettos May 17, 2010 at 7:18 AM

OMG I would have slapped her! BOZO??? RUDE!

Wow you did have a bad experience. How rude! When I was in the hospital with a kidney stone, a nurse came in during the middle of the night to take blood and was horrible with the needle. She was just rooting around in my arm with it to find a vein. Needless to say when we got home my grandmother wrote a very strong letter that went with a phonecall and we were assured the nurse was going to be "re trained" and even got our bill knocked down. You should def make a phonecall, she needs to be "re trained" in bedside manners.

The Bipolar Diva May 17, 2010 at 7:09 PM

I called in this morning and spoke with both the head of the separtment and the head of patient relations. I told them exactly what happened and they were both silent for a bit. They were shocked and said that they would both call her in as soon as they hung up the phone. They were especially quiet when I told them that she violated HIPAA, I guess that's a big time no-no.
I made sure though to tell them about the incredible nurses he had there also.
I'm STILL boiling about the whole thing tonight!

Steph May 17, 2010 at 8:51 PM

You're a better person than I am...I would have had some serious words with her! I'm glad you called and spoke to the head of the department!

Obviously, she's no nurse. At l;east no nurse I've ever met who tend to be compassionate and kind. You showed remarkable restraint even with your hackles raised!

Aunt of 14 May 18, 2010 at 8:47 AM

Jenny Brown May 18, 2010 at 9:10 AM

First of all, Congratulations on your award, I got my first award about 2 weeks ago - and I'm still beeming from it!

And I don't think nurses are allowed to call our kids BOZO's..(not unless it is done in a joking manner, maybe)......that's a parents job!

I noticed that you started following my blog and I wanted to say thank you, I really appreciate that you find me funny and want to keep in touch! Being a part-time blogger makes it hard for me to post daily, and some posts are better than others, but I promise I'll always reply back if you decide to comment on my blog!

Have a great day! Now I'm off to snoop around your blog awhile! :):)
